After Dark

After Dark documents Liam Wong’s nocturnal journeys around the world’s most vibrant cities, from Hong Kong and Seoul to London and Edinburgh. The design and format of the book takes reference from the world of cinema, including evocative Chinese custom typography interludes from Toshi Omagari printed on delicate semi-transparent stock. Further connecting the images to their roots in cinema, images are framed to classical film ratios – 2.39:1, 1.85:1, 16:9 and 4:3. After Dark stands as the most successful crowdfunding campaign on Volume to date, raising over five times its funding goal.

Typographer Toshi Omagari developed a variable width typeface for the project inspired by title designs of Chinese contemporary cinema. The special edition of After Dark – housed in a custom box with a magnetic fastening – features a sans serif version of the book’s title stamped in metallic red foil, taking design cues from classic anime VHS packaging.
